Helmut Newton

PhotoUtopia Intro: When I read that Helmut Newton had died of a heart attack whilst driving a pink Cadillac down Sunset Boulevard, I remember thinking it was exactly how you would have expected him to go. As a character he was larger than life, his work has caused more controversy than most fashion photographers, at first I thought his images vulgar and obvious, but he has a style and an approach that is uniquely his, and that alone is worthy of note. His statuesque portraits stand out from his counterparts and his portfolio is broader and more adventurous than you might first expect. His ability to create striking image after striking image is unparalleled.

Wikipedia*Helmut Newton (31 October 1920, Berlin, Germany – 23 January 2004, West Hollywood, California, USA), was a German-Australian photographer. He was a "prolific, widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other publications."
